幻 depicts a bundle of bound threads alongside an unraveling, loose thread. Because an unraveled thread cannot be smoothly bound into a bundle with the rest, it conveys abnormality or subversion of order. This extends to mean confusion, delusion, and by further extension, phantom, illusory, or unreal.
