弩 is composed of 奴 (slave) and 弓 (bow). 奴 refers to a person who has lost their freedom and is forced into labor, implying someone who works more diligently and exerts far greater effort than ordinary people. A bow powered by mechanical force delivers far greater energy and effort than one drawn solely by human strength; thus, 弩 came to represent the crossbow.
