鬍 is composed of 髟 (hair) and 胡 (casual). 胡 originally meant the flesh under the chin, and because hair grows abundantly under the jaw, 胡 came to denote the beard under the chin. As 胡 later evolved to take on derivative meanings, 鬍 was specifically created by adding 髟 to preserve and represent the original meaning of hair growing on the face and chin.
