鳳 is a pictograph of a large bird. This bird has enormous wings and long tail feathers; it is the legendary king of all birds and a symbol of auspiciousness. When the large bird takes flight, it causes the air to flow and move. Therefore, 鳳 later evolved into the character 風 to express this natural phenomenon.
