罙 depicts the scene of a hand reaching into a cave or hole to dig out a water source. It was originally composed of 穴 (hole), 手 (hand), and 水 (water), and was later simplified to its current form. Its original meaning has been replaced by the characters 探 (probe, explore) and 深 (deep). Nowadays, 罙 is no longer used independently as a standalone character; it only appears as a component in other characters.
