黐 is composed of 黍 (millet) and 离 (separate). 黍 is the pictograph of a cereal plant, and when grain like millet is cooked with water it becomes sticky and adhesive, while 离 depicts the scene of a bird caught and stuck in a net, conveying the idea of adhesion or clinging; thus 黐 means to stick, to adhere, or to be gluey.
