孤 is composed of 子 (child) and 瓜 (melon). A melon is larger in size compared to typical vegetables and fruits, and eating one is enough to feel full, thus carrying the meaning of being solitary. 子 is the picture of a baby. Baby is vulnerable and is particularly afraid of loneliness.
