船 is composed of 舟(boat) and 㕣 (pond). 㕣 is the picture of a pond between two mountains. Water flows from the mountains and becomes a pond, so 㕣 has the meaning of along or follow. Ancient ships didn’t have engines, they needed to follow the water flow.
